As i wrote about in the article 'The Great Flat White', when you talk about brands and products which have shaped popular culture there can be no denying that 'Coffee' stands proudly amongst them. The likes of Coffee Republic, Starbucks, Costa and Cafe Nero's all dominate the market and in Bournemouth it is no exception, yes Starbucks in town has gone but this was not due to lack of popularity, Starbucks in Westbourne is carrying the torch for this American behemoth.

Costa Coffee: Taking on the Tea Rooms of Westbourne!!

Up until now, if you wanted to drink in Westbourne your choices were the aforementioned Starbucks, SOHO or the selection of Tea Rooms catering to the "Tea needs to be drunk from china cups" brigade but fear not valued reader Costa has stepped in to create some competition and it isn't set to disappoint. With it's typical Claret facia and it's perfect position, its as obvious as the Duchess of York at a Cash My Gold roadshow, walking through the main door you are hit by a typical 'Costa' experience with shades of brown the order of the day - mocha walls, chocolate sofa's and tables and yes... at last... and slightly out of character for Costa: free 'The Cloud' WiFi with no catches, limits or annoying vouchers, just sign-up, login and you're away. If, like me, you use a Mac and cannot login into Stabucks WiFi you'll get my joy of uncomplicated access. So what about the drinks? Well as an avid coffee drinker i can only vouch for my favoured 'Flat White' (right) which is an art in itself and as such requires practice and as Costa is only a couple of weeks old the drink is a good marriage of coffee and milk but too hot, as for the required fern on the top? I think 'Abstract' art is a better reference. That's about it really, the location is perfect, temperature not too cold to hurry you up and not too hot to make you uncomfortable, they seem to keep the temperature consistant throughout the day. So as i sit here, online, sipping my flat white rather than doing the same in Starbucks i can reliably state that if people were less snobby and ventured into here rather than Starbucks they would be very surprised however i do like this open, quiet environment so maybe i should recommend you stay with 'bucks'. |
